In modern linguistics, the problem of “negation” occupies a significant place and, despite a large number of studies, is insufficiently studied. Negation is one of the inherently existing undivided semantically connotational categories characteristic of the entire linguistic picture of the world, which cannot be defined through simpler semantic elements.
Negation is one of the main concepts in many areas of science: in linguistics, philosophy, formal and mathematical logic. Each of these independent sciences defines the phenomenon of the category of negation according to the characteristic of this science, therefore, it is necessary to recognize that the problem of negation is multifaceted. The study of the category of negation in the English language seems relevant, since a clear understanding of the functions and correct use of forms of negation are important for effective speech communication. The category of negation is one of the most difficult in the process of verbal interaction for English language learners. In addition, it is important to learn how to find negative forms in a text and be able to formulate negative sentences, taking into account not only the grammatical and lexical features of the language being studied, but also pragmatic factors.
