ENGLISH CLIMATE

The climate of England is rather soft because Great Britain is situated on Islands with the Atlantic Ocean surrounding them and the warm current the Gulf Stream.

The cold air that comes to England from the continent already becomes warm when it moves across the North Sea and brings many clouds to Britain. In the South of the Island it seldom snows and the snow does not stay for a long time. It soon melts. And it often rains in all the seasons of the year.

TheEnglish sometimes say that they have three variants of the weather: when it rains in the morning, when it rains in the afternoon or when it rains all day long.

English weather is very changeable. A fine morning can change into a wet afternoon and evening. And a nasty morning can change into a fine afternoon. English people often say that other countries have a climate, in England we have weather.

The famous London fogs are well known to everyone. They fall in autumn and in winter as a rule. It is the most unpleasant aspect of English weather. The fog spreads everywhere, it is in the streets and it creeps into the houses. Cars move along slowly, people cannot see each other. In a dense fog all traffic is stopped, people cannot breathe, as the air is awful because of the smoke of many thousands of chimneys.

So we may say that the British climate has three main features: it is mild, humid, and changeable. That means that it is not hot in summer and it is not usually cold in winter. This humid and mild climate is good for plants. Trees and flowers begin to blossom early in spring.
