Prior to Raising Steam
Before raising steam a thorough inspection of the boiler should be made. The inspection should apply internally and externally, and should include the following essential points:
(a) Internal surfaces clean and free from scale.
(b) Tubes proved clear by the use of searching wires or steel balls.
(c) Internal fittings properly secured.
(d) Water gauge passages and other boiler mounting apertures clear.
(e) Boiler valves and cocks proved workable and left shut.
(f) Safety valves workable by hand-easing gear and left shut.
(g) Combustion chamber and gas passages sighted for cleanliness with refractory brickwork in good repair and expansion allowances clear.
(h) Manhole doors and handhole plugs in position with good joints and tight satisfactory.
(i) Superheated steam temperature control, desuperheater control valve put in manual control and positioned so that all the steam passing through the superheater bypasses the control desuperheater.
When the inspection is completed and the boiler is in order:
Open: boiler superheater steam pipe and economizer vents, superheater header drain and steam raising (circulating) valves, water level gauge, steam and water isolating valves and cocks, pressure gauge cocks, water level alarm gear isolating valves, feed check valves between economizer and steam drum.
